Bethlehem (MAY 6) –
State Senator Lisa M. Boscola (D-18)
announced today the continuation of
two programs designed to help
Pennsylvanians afford tuition for
post-secondary education.
The first
initiative, known as the Academic
Excellence Scholarship Award
Program, is a program that will
provide scholarships to incoming
freshmen attending Pennsylvania
post-secondary institutions in the
2005 and 2006 Fall Semesters.
This scholarship
program awards $1,500 at the
beginning of the first year
education at a college, university,
or trade-institution. Applicants
must be in the top 3 to 5 percent of
their graduating class (depending on
the graduating class size), must
have achieved a grade point average
of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale,
must have scored at least 1150 on
the SATs or have earned a composite
score of 25 on the ACT.
The total number
of recipients for this program will
be based upon the resources
available through the Pennsylvania
Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
“What I love
about this program is that it is a
reward for students who achieve a
high level of academic excellence.
Essentially, this is a motivator for
our students to work hard in high
school,” Boscola stated.
The second program,
the New Economy Technology
Scholarship Program, consists of two
different scholarships - the SciTech
Scholarship and the Technology
Scholarship. Recipients of these
scholarships must agree to work full
time in Pennsylvania for one year
for each year that a scholarship is
received or the scholarship converts
to a loan repayable with interest.
Senator Boscola
stated that this program is designed
to create a sustained pool of highly
trained technology workers, improve
the Commonwealth's ability to
attract and support new companies
and curb the migration of
Pennsylvania's best-trained workers
to other states.
PHEAA originally
requested funding for these two
programs from the PA General
Assembly. They have since rescinded
their original request to, instead
opting to self-fund it.
Individuals
interested in either of these
programs may find additional
information on PHEAA’s website at
www.pheaa.org, or may contact
Senator Lisa Boscola’s district
office toll-free at 1-877-535-1818.
