HARRISBURG
(Sep 21) –
State Senator Lisa Boscola commended
Governor Ed Rendell today for
heeding her call to work toward the
reduction in the reservoir levels in
New York City as one piece in the
puzzle to provide flood mitigation
to residents and business owners
along the Delaware River.
“The reduction
in the reservoir levels of three New
York City reservoirs is an important
first step to provide relief to
those who have been affected by the
floods of the last few years and for
that I commend Governor Rendell for
his swift action,” Boscola stated.
In August,
Senator Boscola had requested that a
study be undertaken by the Delaware
River Basin Commission to accurately
assess the affect that reservoir
releases had on the flooding in the
past two years that produced over
8,000 property damage claims made to
the Federal Emergency Management
Agency.
“As the Governor
stated, this is not a “silver
bullet”, but will allow some peace
of mind to those affected with the
knowledge that the necessary studies
will be conducted to provide a
comprehensive approach to flood
mitigation along the Delaware
River,” Boscola added.
Boscola
praised officials of the four states
that comprise the Delaware River
Basin Commission for agreeing to
establish a task force that will
examine flood mitigation issues
along the 330-mile river with over
200 tributaries.
“It has been 22
years since the flood mitigation
plan has been updated by the Basin
Commission. The time for an update
has long passed and hopefully this
task force will complete its work
with recommendations that will be
effective in protecting the lives
and property of residents and
business owners along the corridor,” Boscola further stated.
Other members of
the Delaware River Basin Commission,
which was created in 1961, are New
York, New Jersey and Delaware.
