Governor Wolf Announces Fees for Background Checks for Volunteers will be Waived

Background CheckIn 2014, the General Assembly made important changes to better protect our children from potential abuse. Included in the 23 package of bills signed into law last fall, were expanded background checks for volunteers who work with children. It has become apparent in the months leading up to the July 1, 2015 deadline for obtaining such checks, that this requirement was having a detrimental impact on organizations whose lifeblood are Pennsylvanians who give of their time to make an impact on our youth.

Therefore, in consultation with the General Assembly, Governor Wolf announced on June 10, 2015, that fees would be waived for volunteers who are required to obtain a child abuse and criminal history background checks. Volunteers under the statute who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years would still be required to pay for the federal FBI criminal background check.
