State Senator Lisa M. Boscola - Your Voice in Harrisburg

Redistricting Update & Upcoming Events

Fair DistrictsVoters should select their elected officials.  Elected officials should not select their voters.  In Pennsylvania, hyper-partisanship and the unwillingness of legislators to work together to find common sense solutions has become a new normal and it is not good for our democracy.  The problem is pervasive and is often associated with the dysfunction in United State Congress. Pennsylvania's system for drawing boundary lines encourages this type of hyper-partisanship in both Washington and Harrisburg.  It gives the power to those most interested in the outcome to set the rules of the game.

Legislative districts need to be drawn that take into account county and municipal boundaries as the primary factors, not party affiliation.  We need a more transparent system.  Our current form of drawing districts forces candidates to move toward their party's extremes due to districts being drawn to assure election in the primary.  The number of competitive elections have decreased to a small number and that is not good for our democracy nor for solving some of the big problems facing Pennsylvania.

Panel DiscussionFor that reason, I have introduced Senate Bill 22which creates a true citizens commission to redraw Congressional and PA General Assembly districts following the 2020 census and subsequent elections.  By removing those who benefit the most from drawing the boundary lines, I believe we will in turn have a better representative democracy for you.

As we continue to build support for Senate Bill 22, and Rep. Samuelson’s companion bill in the House, HB 722, there are two events I would like to bring to your attention.  First, on Thursday, May 4th, I will be participating in a panel discussion entitled “Gerrymandering: How to Recognize and Resist It” from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Colton Chapel at Lafayette College.  Rep. Samuelson along with Carol Kunihom of Fair Districts PA will also be on the panel, which will be moderated by Dr. John Kincaid.  Please feel free to join in on the discussion.

Second, Fair Districts PA will be holding a Lobby Day in the State Capitol on Tuesday, May 9th, which will include a press conference at 11 a.m. at the Main Capitol Building.
