Balanced Approach, Finding Middle Ground Needed to Re-Open PA Economy

Senator Lisa Boscola Calls for a Middle Ground to Re-opening Businesses in PA :: April 15, 2020

Pennsylvanians deserve representatives that put aside their partisanship for the health & well-being of all residents.  There needs to be a balanced approach and a middle ground for re-opening Pennsylvania’s economy.

Yesterday I offered an amendment that identified several businesses that I know to be operating in other states dealing with COVID-19 - with comparable circumstances as the Commonwealth is facing – and these same businesses are unable to operate here in Pennsylvania.  I decided to offer this amendment to Senate Bill 613 because I personally felt that it went too far in rolling back certain aspects of Governor Wolf’s shut down order.  I sought a more balanced approach to re-opening businesses and protecting employees.  More businesses can operate safely and responsibly right now - specifically, real estate, construction both residential and certain commercial projects, car dealerships and garden centers.  Living on the border of New Jersey, it doesn’t make sense to me that a person can drive into New Jersey and purchase a car. It also doesn’t make sense to me that someone currently living in Easton can buy a house in Phillipsburg but not be able to sell their house in Pennsylvania.

These businesses have demonstrated the ability to operate safely in other states, so it only made sense to me to begin re-opening businesses that we already know can operate responsibly through this crisis.  I was proud to offer the amendment unfortunately it was defeated.

Please take a few moments to watch my remarks on final passage of Senate Bill 613.  I feel very strongly that we, your representatives in Harrisburg, need to do a better job working together to restart Pennsylvania in a responsible way.  I am committed to working with my Democratic and Republican colleagues, along with Governor Wolf, on a plan to move Pennsylvania forward.  Fighting for common-sense legislation will continue to be my primary focus as well as continuing to advocate for a balanced approach to lift Pennsylvania back on its feet, once again.
